Science

At St Michael's Primary School, our primary intent is to instil a curiosity about the world and promote a deep understanding of fundamental scientific concepts. Our curriculum aims to inspire a love for learning, encourage critical thinking, and nurture scientific skills and knowledge. Through engaging, hands-on activities and exploration, we seek to develop a strong foundation in scientific principles, encouraging students to ask questions, make predictions, and conduct experiments. As with History and Geography, our school collaborates with HEP to ensure a high-quality history curriculum.

Key Components of our Curriculum:

1. Scientific Enquiry:

  • Encourages students to ask questions, make predictions, and test hypotheses.
  • Develops skills in observation, measurement, and data analysis.

2. Earth and Space:

  • Explores topics such as the solar system, natural phenomena, and Earth's processes.
  • Engages students in understanding the Earth’s atmosphere, weather patterns, and environmental conservation.

3. Living Things:

  • Focusses on the study of plants, animals, and microorganisms.
  • Teaches concepts related to habitats, life cycles, and adaptation.

4. Materials and their Properties:

  • Investigates different materials and their characteristics.
  • Explores changes in materials, their uses, and the impact of human activities on the environment.

5. Forces and Energy:

  • Introduces concepts of motion, forces, and energy transfer.
  • Explores electricity, magnetism, and basic principles of energy conservation.

6. Human Biology:

  • Covers the human body, its organs, and bodily functions.
  • Promotes understanding of health, hygiene, and personal well-being.

7. Environmental Awareness:

  • Raises awareness about environmental issues, sustainability, and conservation efforts.
  • Encourages students to take responsibility for their environment and make eco-friendly choices.

Through this comprehensive and engaging science curriculum, we aim to empower our children with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the world around them and inspire the next generation of scientists and thinkers.
