Seek Joy in Service

Headteacher’s Welcome

Welcome to St. Michael’s Church of England Primary School web-site. I hope it will give visitors both the information they need as well as a flavour of life at St. Michael’s.

Many would call us an old-fashioned school! We value good manners, kindness, forgiveness, integrity and respect. Our school motto ‘Seek Joy in Service’ encourages us to contribute to the wider community. The leaders of tomorrow will need self-confidence and charisma tempered with humility and a caring heart – and we want our children to be the leaders of tomorrow!

Our strong links with St. Michael and All Angels Parish church mean that, as soon as a family enter the school, they become part of the St. Michael’s ‘extended family’ which provides a sense of belonging and support, especially for families who don’t attend their own church, are of another faith or no faith at all.

Our curriculum aims to develop the skills children need for later life and we have a very strong focus on the highest standards of literacy and numeracy. Children are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills which will make them better learners in the future.

We work very hard at St. Michael’s but we also believe that learning should be fun! As well as the essentials of the 2014 National Curriculum, our curriculum covers many wider areas of learning. With a view to our desire for our children to be leaders of tomorrow, we place a lot of emphasis on Music, Performing Arts and PE and use these as opportunities to develop poise and confidence.

As Headteacher, I love to walk down corridors and hear peals of laughter from many classrooms, intense, focused silence or the quiet hum of cooperative chatter from others. Best of all, I like to see empty classrooms! Empty because the children are gardening in the allotment, out at Hilly Fields hunting mini-beasts, in the hall rehearsing for a show, visiting a local club for the elderly or any one of a hundred other things that make learning more exciting and more relevant to the future.

As some would say, we are, in many ways, an old fashioned school but our focus is firmly on the future.

Miss Matthews
