Admissions
Applying for a Place
Please use the following forms to apply for a place at St. Michael's School:
In addition, for Reception Class places an application form is required for Enfield Council, this may be collected from the school between 1st October and 31st January.
Parents should complete the Supplementary Form themselves and where appropriate should complete a copy of the Supporting Statement with their church leader.
All forms should be returned to the school, as soon as possible. The final closing date for returning the forms is January 31st.
Admissions Procedure for September 2011
Parents wishing to apply for a place in the Nursery are invited to visit the School in the Autumn term of the year before their child starts Nursery education. They may submit an application at any time before and up to January 31st of the admission year. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception Class.
60 children are admitted each year to the reception class. Should there then be more applications than there are places the following admissions criteria will apply in order:
- Looked after children1
- Four children will be admitted on the basis of proximity alone, priority being given to the closest3
- A child whose parent/s regularly2 worship at St. Michael's Church
- A child who has a brother or sister (this includes step/half/foster siblings living at the same address) currently attending the school at the time of admission (i.e. in September 2011)
- A child whose parent/s regularly2 worship at St Mary Magdalene or St Luke's and St John's
- A child whose parent/s regularly2 worship at any other Church of England Church
- A child whose parent/s regularly2 worship at a Church of any other Christian denomination belonging to Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, the Evangelical Alliance or Affinity
- A child who has attended the school nursery
- Children who do not fall into the categories above but who live in close proximity to the school, priority being given to the closest
In the event of their being more applicants than places available in a criterion, distance from the home to the school as measured by the Local Authority computer software will be used to order the applicants.
Governors reserve the right to give preference to children with documented Social or Medical needs for whom this is the most appropriate school. This request must be supported by a letter from a doctor, consultant or social worker detailing why the school is the most appropriate and the difficulties that would be caused if another school had to be attended.
Notes:
- looked after children include those subject to care orders and/or those who are in foster care.
- by regular we mean worship at church by a parent/guardian, at least twice monthly over a period of 12 months, prior to the admissions meeting in February. References will be sought via the supplementary admissions form which may be collected and should be returned to the school.
- Distances from home to school are provided by the Enfield Schools Admissions Service. The Governing Body has been advised that the distances provided are calculated by the admissions IT system using ADDRESS-POINT®. This provides a national grid co-ordinate and a unique reference for each postal address in Great Britain. The grid reference is provided to a resolution of 0.1 metres (10cm). The accuracy of each ADDRESS-POINT® is such that each point will fall within the addressed building. In the case of multi-occupancy buildings such as flats where there may only be one address point, priority will be given to the applicants whose door number is the lowest numerically or alphabetically.
Late applicants may be considered if a vacancy occurs. From September, any new children applying for a place will be placed on the waiting list in order following the criteria. This may mean that other children already on the waiting list could move further down. Proof of address in all cases will be sought.
Please note that children who have a statement of Special Educational Needs naming this school have an automatic right of entry.
When admitting children, we follow the procedure, taking children initially under the first criteria. If you are not offered a place at St. Michael's School, you have the right to appeal against the School's decision. Appeals should be made in writing, to the Clerk to the Governors c/o St. Michael's School, and should be made within six months of the date of admission to the School. An independent appeals committee will hear your appeal and notify you of their decision.
In-Year Admissions
Applications for In-Year admissions are made in the same way as those made during the normal admissions round. If a place is available and there is no waiting list then the local authority will communicate the governors' offer of a place to the family. If more applications are received than there are places available then applications will be ranked by the governing body in accordance with the oversubscription criteria. If a place cannot be offered at this time then you may ask us for the reasons and you will be informed of your right of appeal. You will be offered the opportunity of being placed on a waiting list. This waiting list will be maintained by the governing body in the order of the oversubscription criteria and not in the order in which the applications are received. Names are removed from the list at the end of each academic year. When a place becomes available the governing body will decide who is at the top of the list so that the LEA can inform the parent that the school is making an offer.
