FGM
Child Protection:
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
Introduction
FGM is a form of child abuse and violence against women and girls, and is therefore part of our child protection procedures.
In the U.K. the practice is illegal under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. It is also an offence to assist a girl or woman to mutilate her own genitalia. It is an offence for anyone to perform FGM in the UK or to assist a girl to perform FGM on herself in the UK. Provided that the mutilation takes place in the UK, the nationality or residence status of the victim is irrelevant.
At St. Michael’s, we have a responsibility to be aware of the danger for some of our children and to remain vigilant. FGM is illegal and we will always report our concerns to the relevant authorities and support them in any legal action taken.
Please see our FGM Policy for more information.
