Lower Juniors
In years 3 and 4 our curriculum is exciting, engaging and challenging. There are opportunities in both year groups for children to develop their leadership skills, using our Values and Motto as tools in doing so. skills. As children start their journey through the Juniors we promote the importance of our Vision for children to become Leaders of Tomorrow, alongside our Values of Love, Respect and Integrity.
Year 3 lead our Nativity Service held at St Michael’s church, developing children's confidence and public speaking skills. In order to help the children develop tolerance and understanding of other faiths, we incorporate into our topic of Judaism a trip to Southgate Progressive Synagogue. We also study Anne Frank in English, looking at how she led her family in demonstrating resilience and fortitude in the face of adversity. Year 3 have an Outdoors Day in the Summer term, linked to PE, Geography and building life skills. During this event children enjoy orienteering, hiking, how to stay safe in public and cooking, In Year 3 we also hold intra-class debating competitions, with Motions being based on topical issues.
Year 4 lead our Harvest Service, also held at St Michael’s church. This is a progression from the Service they led in Year 3 as the scripts are more complex and the concepts that children expect the congregation to understand are often based on real-life events. Year 4 have a residential trip to Tolmers campsite in the Summer term, with one night spent indoors and one night under canvas. During the three days children face personal and team challenges, for example climbing, abseiling, assault courses, orienteering, archery and problem solving as team. This is in addition to them developing their personal and social skills when staying away from home (often for the first time). We have a campfire with songs, jokes, dancing and toasting marshmallows on the fire.
