Personal Development

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”    Aesop

Personal Development* is at the very heart of St Michael’s school.  We highly value the integral skills that give our children the aspiration and commitment to become the leaders of tomorrow. Often these can’t be read or evidenced in a book, however they shine bright in our children from Nursery to Year 6.

Our school values of love, respect and integrity play a vital role, and underpin the fabric of our Christian ethos.

The foci of our PSHE curriculum is resilience. Our programme encompasses an extensive range of skills through a variety of topics which enable our children to become successful citizens in the modern world. For example: taking responsibility for their fiscal health; never underestimating the importance of being a ‘good’ person and following in the teachings of Jesus; children are instructed in First aid, the dangers of substance abuse, the importance of both a healthy body and mind and how to keep themselves safe in the real world and on-line.

We recognise the importance of individualised personal development to ensure every child is enabled to become both autonomous, successful and confident learners who relish the challenges presented to them. Confidence is built from the first experience of speaking up clearly in assembly in Reception; practising clear diction and projection for church services in the middle years; to learning how to shake hands, look people in the eye and make conversation with members of local clubs for the elderly. All these experiences teach essential social skills.

* At St. Michael's, our Personal Development curriculum encompasses R.E (Religious Education), Philosophy, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education),  RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), British Values, Performing Arts, The Resilient Classroom,  performance Skills and PREVENT.
