I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our new families joining the St Michael’s community this year. We hope your children have had a happy and positive start with us. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Macmillan Coffee Morning - your support and presence made it a truly special event.

The children have settled in well, and it has been lovely to see school life back in full swing. We know that returning to routines can be a little more challenging for some than others, but by working together we can strike the right balance and ensure every child feels supported and ready to thrive. As this is a long half term, let’s remember to pace ourselves and take moments to enjoy the journey along the way.

We are also delighted to welcome two new, very furry members to our St Michael’s family - Raphael and Gabriel, our guinea pigs. They have already become much-loved additions, enjoying plenty of cuddles from EYFS and any other visitors who stop by to say hello. Micah is very pleased to have two new friends!

We’ve started the year with great energy and enthusiasm. National Fitness Day was a fantastic success, and we had so much fun promoting the importance of healthy living. We look forward to creating many more opportunities to stay active and celebrate wellbeing throughout the year.

Here’s to a happy and successful term ahead- I look forward to all that is to come.

Since returning to school, our English learning has been rooted in The Lorax by Dr Seuss. Each year group is using the text to inspire a non-fiction piece of writing while also exploring the important themes of deforestation and sustainability. This focus will continue throughout the year, with exciting projects planned to help our children understand the role they can play in protecting our planet. If sustainability is an area you are passionate about and would like to support the school, please do let us know—we are also looking for parent volunteers to help with our greenhouse project.

Saying Hello

ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL SINGING PARTNERSHIP
Our children have made a wonderful start to their hymn practice lessons as part of the St Paul’s Cathedral Singing Partnership. Under the guidance of our singing specialist, Ms Neighbour, they are learning how to perform traditional hymns as well as songs in different languages. It has been a fantastic start to the year and a brilliant addition to our music curriculum. We are already looking forward to the performances later in the year, where the children will be able to showcase their hard work and growing confidence.

Lambeth Palace visit

Four of our children had a lovely time attending an event at Lambeth palace where they were introduced to the book Heroes of Hope, a beautifully illustrated new book by Revd Dr Sharon Prentis and Alysia-Lara Ayonrinde. Alongside this event, it showcased the Difference for Primary Schools Project which we piloted as a whole school last year.

The whole school had a fantastic time celebrating National Fitness Day! The children enjoyed talking about the different ways we can stay healthy and how we can make exercise part of our daily routine. They also learned the importance of resilience and perseverance, especially when faced with challenges. To end the day on a high note, everyone joined together in the playground to dance to the lively Waka Waka song—it was a joyful and energetic way to finish the celebrations!

Nursery

We have had a fantastic start in nursery. The children have settled brilliantly and we have been having lots of fun. We have been learning all about colours and our families, as well singing nursery rhymes and reading stories. We’ve visited the Big School to look for bibles and crosses.

Reception

The Reception children have settled in brilliantly and are already showing great enthusiasm for learning. We have enjoyed stories about settling in and building friendships, and the children have begun exploring our school values of love, respect, and integrity in the way they learn and play together. They have also made an excellent start in phonics.

In our autumn leaf hunt, the children loved exploring the changing season. This linked beautifully to our RE key question, “Who made this wonderful world?” as they reflected on the beauty of creation around them. We are so proud of all the children and the wonderful way they have begun their St Michael’s journey. We are all so excited for the term ahead.

Year 1

Year one has been Seeking Joy in Service, making bunting for the Macmillian coffee morning last Friday. We talked about what charity means and how we can help others and follow our school motto.

Year 2

Year 2 created some artwork in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

 Year 3

Year 4

This term, Year 4 have been exploring The Lorax and learning all about sustainability. To bring the story to life, we were surprised with a “crime scene” on our balcony - chopped-down trees, mysterious footprints, and hidden clues! The children became detectives for the day, investigating who might have caused this environmental disaster. We had great fun gathering evidence, piecing together the mystery, and linking it back to the important message of protecting our planet and using resources responsibly.

Year 5

5GJ have had a great start to the year and are absolutely loving their learning journey so far and have taken to their instruments like natural professional musicians - "The are very musical."

Year 5RB have been taking part in weekly morning sessions with Success Club and are really embracing the experience. These sessions focus on mindfulness and encourage pupils to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. The children have created their own “Attitude Journals,” which they decorate with things that represent them, while also using them to set intentions about how they want to approach life. It has been wonderful to see the children engaging so thoughtfully, developing positive habits, and learning strategies that will support them both inside and outside the classroom.

Year 6

Year 6 have settled back into school with energy and determination, already experiencing their first taste of practice SATs and showing real resilience. They’ve explored how to care for the world around them through The Lorax, discovered why water is such a big issue in California, learnt about the events of WW1, and even studied the incredible workings of the human heart. With all that learning under their belts, the class are now buzzing with excitement as they look forward to their much-anticipated residential week away.

Mindful Jar Exercise

This is a great exercise you can do as a family. Try it before bedtime or after a busy day. Fill a clear jar with water and add a spoonful of glitter or sand. Give it a good shake and watch as the glitter swirls around, just like our busy thoughts and feelings. Sit quietly together and notice how the glitter slowly settles at the bottom. Our minds work the same way, when we pause and take a few deep breaths, our thoughts and feelings begin to settle too.
