Spring 1 2026

Although it feels a little late to wish you a Happy New Year, as this is our first newsletter of the half term, I would like to begin by saying how pleased I am with the way the children have made such a positive start to 2026.

Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed a rich programme of learning about faith and belief, with many year groups visiting different places of worship: Year 1 and Year 3 visited the synagogue, Year 2 and Year 4 visited a church, Year 5 visited a Sikh temple and Year 6 visited a Buddhist temple. The children have shown deep respect, curiosity and thoughtfulness throughout these visits, demonstrating a genuine understanding and appreciation of different religions and cultures. Thank you to the parents who supported these trips and to those who generously shared their own faith experiences with the children as part of their learning – your contributions have been invaluable. This has really strengthened our inclusive practices.

We have also been working very closely with our School Improvement Partners to ensure that our school remains aligned with recent Ofsted changes. We have received some very positive feedback and have agreed clear areas of focus for the year ahead, which will help us continue to strengthen our provision.

As we are now halfway through the academic year, it is pleasing to see that our children continue to make good academic progress. We remain committed to meeting the needs of all learners by working closely as a staff team and, importantly, by listening to the voices of both children and parents.

Parent Coffee Morning – Thank You and Update

Thank you to all the parents who attended our Coffee Morning on 19 January – we really appreciated seeing so many of you there. It is always such a good opportunity to listen to your views, strengthen our home–school partnership, and reflect together on how we can continue to work in the best interests of the children, rooted in our values of Love, Respect and Integrity.

Parents shared that children feel happy, safe and well supported at St Michael’s, praising our kind staff, calm environment and the wide range of trips, clubs and enrichment opportunities. We also discussed key areas for development, particularly around communication, and outlined plans to streamline information through one main platform, improve our website calendar, and ensure more consistent, timely class communication.

We reflected on homework expectations, wellbeing and SEND support, behaviour principles, and clearer communication about who to contact for different queries. We also shared updates on our school priorities, including reading and writing, curriculum development, personal development, and our digital strategy.

We are always grateful to work with such a supportive and respectful parent community.

National Handwriting Day

We recently celebrated National Handwriting Day in school, with a focus on the four Ps: posture, pencil grip, paper position and pressure.

Across the school, children were reminded that strong handwriting starts with good foundations.

By revisiting these key habits, pupils were supported to write more comfortably, confidently and fluently.

Number Day 2026 – “Remember why Maths is fun!”

On Friday 6 February, we celebrated Number Day in school and what a fantastic day it was! Children (and staff) embraced the theme with creative number-themed outfits, while others came in their PE kits ready for active maths.

The day began with a short Collective Worship introducing Number Day and our NSPCC fundraising focus. Throughout the day, pupils were set a maths challenge or riddle to puzzle over and discuss with friends.

In lessons, children took part in enjoyable, game-based maths activities linked to their learning, as well as an Active Maths session that got them moving while working with numbers. In the afternoon, classes enjoyed more relaxed, maths-linked games such as board and card games.

It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic and engaged with maths in different and fun ways. Thank you to families for supporting this special day! We raised  £243 for NSPCC.

Choral Partnerships

Working in partnership with St Paul’s Cathedral has brought our school many wonderful opportunities, and our children have already benefitted from a range of enriching musical experiences as part of this programme.

As part of this partnership, Laurel Neighbour will continue to provide termly reports on our whole-class singing sessions. These reports reflect on pupils’ progress and achievements, outline plans for the term ahead, and highlight how the teaching aligns with the Music Curriculum.

We have been able to take part in some great singing opportunities and will take other opportunities when they come up, the children have loved taking part in these events:

  • LDBS Service at St Paul’s Cathedral – Thursday 13th  February (Year 6):
A limited group of up to 30 Year 6 pupils will have the chance to join a massed choir with other partner schools, with a rehearsal and service taking place at St Paul’s. Further timings will be shared closer to the date.
  • Massed Choir Concert – Wednesday 29 April (Year 3 or 4):
Plans are underway for a large showcase concert under the Dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. This will be an afternoon and evening event, with more details to follow once the date is confirmed.
  • Sung Lunchtime Eucharist – 6th February (Year 5):
Schools are invited to bring a class of up to 30 pupils to sing at a 12:30 Eucharist at St Paul’s, including rehearsal and a Cathedral tour. Dates will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

National Year of Reading 2026 – Going All In!

2026 is the National Year of Reading, and at St Michael’s we’ll be going all in on something we already value deeply — reading for pleasure.

Throughout the year, we’ll be celebrating all kinds of reading: books, stories, comics, magazines, websites and audiobooks — because all reading counts. Our focus will be on helping children enjoy reading, talk about what they love, and see reading as something that belongs to everyone.

Children will take part in familiar and much-loved events such as World Book Day (Friday 6th March), Reading Mornings with Parents and Carers (Friday 6th March and Friday 12th June, 9:05–9:30am), alongside class celebrations that encourage sharing favourite reads and reading recommendations.

At home, you can support your child by reading together regularly, letting them choose what they read, talking about books and stories, and keeping reading relaxed and enjoyable.

Together, we’re building a joyful reading culture — at school and at home.

Empowering Learning Through Computing

This term at St Michael’s, pupils have taking part in an exciting new approach to Computing through Project-Based Learning. As part of this initiative, Google Workspace and Canva have been introduced to support creative and meaningful learning.

Pupils are using these tools to plan ideas, create presentations and videos, and develop their creativity and communication skills, while staff have received training to support this work in class.

By giving children greater choice and ownership, this approach builds confidence, flexibility and real-world digital skills. Learning will conclude with a celebration of work, where pupils will proudly showcase what they have created.

This is My Place - Children's Mental Health Week

From 9–15 February, we recognised Children’s Mental Health Week, with this year’s theme “This Is My Place”, which focuses on belonging.

Across the school, children took part in gentle, age-appropriate activities and conversations that help them explore what it means to feel included, valued and connected within our school community.

These moments were woven naturally into the school day and delivered in a calm, supportive way.

Children were also reminded that it is always okay to talk about how they are feeling and that there are trusted adults in school who are there to help.

RE visits

This half term, several year groups have been exploring different World Religions as part of their learning. As well as classroom activities, pupils had the opportunity to visit places of worship to deepen their understanding. Year 1 and Year 3 visited a Synagogue, Year 5 visited a Gurdwara, and Year 6 visited a Buddhist Temple. These visits provided valuable first-hand experiences and helped bring their learning to life.

Year 5 also got the opportunity to sing at St Pauls Cathedral during the Eucharist service which was such a great experience and Year 6 children will be singing this week as part of the London Diocese Schools Service.

St Michael’s were very privileged to be invited to the Confirmation of the Election of the Archbishop. Two children from Year 5 and two children from Year 6 took part in the service by giving the Charge. It was a truly special and memorable occasion for everyone involved.

Free Online Parenting Support for Parents of Year 5 and Year 6

Enfield Council is fully funding a series of targeted online parenting support groups for parents of children in Years 5 and 6. These evidence-based courses are designed to support families as children prepare for SATs, transition to secondary school, and navigate the social, emotional and physical changes of this stage of development.

Two courses will be available:

  • Stronger Relationships, which focuses on communication and cooperation between co-parents and carers.
  • Intro to SFSC, which focuses on practical parenting skills to support children’s wellbeing and development.

Sessions will cover topics including managing school stress, online safety, building self-esteem, developing independence, healthy friendships, and preparing for the move to Year 7.

We will be sending flyers with further details shortly, including how to enrol.
